Monroe
Monroe in the county seat of Union County, which is often referred to as “Sweet Union.” The town was incorporated in 1843 and named after James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States. It’s location along the railroad line between Charlotte and Wilmington encouraged it’s economic growth early on, and continues to be well utilized today.
The downtown center, features many county government buildings including the Old Victorian Courthouse, which serves as a symbol of our county. Many of the newer buildings downtown have been arranges to have generous walkways and park like spaces in between. Many of the businesses in downtown Monroe have been revitalized and have a quaint, “Mom & Pop” type feel.
Most people are familiar with Monroe, from their drive along Highway 74 from “Charlotte to the beach.” This stretch serves as the county & town’s true economic center and offers a wide array of shopping centers, malls, and restaurants for travelers and locals alike.
It is the area along the outskirts of Monroe that house many a historic home, farms, planned developments, and even country clubs, that have so much to offer it’s residents for housing needs.
